How to Keep Score in Bowling (Step by Step)

Last updated October 7, 2026 · BowlingCalc

A bowling scorecard is a record of deliveries first and a running total second. Write the roll, check whether a bonus is still waiting, then add the frame when you have enough information.

Start with the boxes and symbols

A standard ten-pin game has ten frames. The small boxes record each delivery; the larger area underneath holds the cumulative score. In frames one through nine, you have up to two deliveries. A first-ball strike ends that frame immediately. The tenth frame has room for an extra delivery when you earn one.

Use X for a strike, / for a spare, a dash for a miss, and F for a foul. Ordinary digits show pins knocked down on a delivery. A spare mark replaces the second number: write 7/ instead of 73. Both deliveries cleared that rack, but the slash tells you to include the next delivery as a bonus.

Open frames: add the two deliveries

If pins remain after the second delivery, the frame is open. Seven pins followed by two is worth nine. Add nine to the previous completed total. A frame of 9– is also worth nine. You can settle an open frame immediately, provided earlier strike or spare bonuses are already settled.

Strikes and spares: wait for the bonus

A strike scores ten plus the pinfall from the next two deliveries. Those are deliveries, not necessarily two whole frames. If X is followed by 7/, the strike scores twenty. If X is followed by another X and then eight, the first strike scores twenty-eight.

A spare scores ten plus the next delivery. A 7/ followed by nine scores nineteen. The nine still counts in its own frame as well. Bonus scoring deliberately counts that delivery again for the earlier mark. Leave a running-total box empty until its required deliveries have happened; an empty box does not mean zero.

The tenth frame finishes the arithmetic

An open tenth ends after two deliveries. A spare earns one fill ball at a fresh rack. A strike gives you two more deliveries, with the rack reset after another strike. For X, 7, /, the last delivery clears the three remaining pins. It is not a new ten-pin rack. The tenth simply totals its own deliveries; fill balls do not open an eleventh frame.

Enter this sequence in the bowling score calculator. The last three deliveries, X81, all belong to frame ten. The table shows the value of each frame and the cumulative number you write beneath it.

Check the mistake, not just the final number

If your total differs, locate the first frame where the two scorecards disagree. Check its rolls and the next one or two deliveries. A mistake near the beginning carries through later totals, so changing only the final number hides the cause.

Common errors include giving a strike thirty automatically, using the next two frame totals instead of the next two deliveries, and treating a tenth-frame fill ball as another scored frame. A foul still uses a delivery and contributes zero to bonuses. For paper practice, print a blank score sheet and replay the example one roll at a time. Frequently asked questions

Why is a strike worth more than 10?

A strike includes the next two deliveries as bonus pins. Its final value can be from 10 to 30, depending on those deliveries.

How many balls can you throw in the 10th frame?

Two after an open frame, or three total when you make a strike or spare. The extra delivery or deliveries settle the bonuses.

What does F mean on a bowling score?

F means foul. The delivery counts, but its pinfall scores zero.

What is a turkey?

A turkey is three consecutive strikes. It can cross a frame boundary into the tenth-frame fill balls.
