How bowling handicap works

A handicap is an allowance added to a scratch score under a league’s chosen rules. It gives bowlers with different established averages a way to compete in the same event. It does not change the pins recorded on the original scorecard, and it does not guarantee equal results in every game.

This calculator uses a common basis-and-percentage formula. Subtract your average from the basis, keep the difference at zero or above, multiply by the percentage, then drop the fractional part. An optional cap limits the resulting allowance. The series figure is the per-game handicap multiplied by the number of games.

Work through an example

With an average of 165, a basis of 220 and a ninety-percent factor, the difference is 55. Multiplying 55 by 90 and dividing by 100 gives 49.5. Dropping the fraction produces 49 pins per game, or 147 across three games. A scratch score of 180 would become 229 with that allowance.

If the league caps handicap at forty pins, the same calculation stops at forty after rounding. If your average reaches or exceeds the basis, this tool returns zero. It does not apply a negative handicap. A league using a different system needs its own calculation and cannot be modelled merely by selecting a familiar-looking preset.

Choose the right average and settings

Ask your league secretary for the basis, factor, cap and entering-average rules. The default values are an example, not a recommendation or a claim about your league. An average calculated from a handful of practice games may differ from the official figure you must use.

The average helper adds the scratch scores you enter, divides by the game count and drops the fraction. Keep the original total pinfall and game count in your records; combining rounded averages can lose information. Read our average guide for examples.

For a complete league record, keep scratch score, allowance and adjusted total in separate columns. Use the score calculator for deliveries, and the printable sheet for paper records. Confirm official results with the organizer.

Frequently asked questions

What does 90% of 220 mean?

Subtract your average from 220, multiply the positive difference by 90%, then drop the fraction. At a 165 average, that gives 49 pins per game.

Does handicap round up?

This calculator drops the fractional part before applying an optional cap. Check that this matches your league’s rules.

Can my handicap be negative?

This calculator returns zero when the average is at or above the basis. It does not calculate negative handicaps.

Is series handicap different from game handicap?

Here, series handicap is the per-game allowance multiplied by the number of games. Check whether your league uses a different team or series method.
